Sky:

A native of Vancouver, BC Michelle Forsyth spent much of her early years living in the cramped quarters of a sailboat with 4 other members of her family. The restriction of space dictated she abandon her usual play things for pen and colored pencils, an experience that continues to inform her work. Her art often involves multiple levels of investigation and a merging of methods and materials into the final work. Her diverse array of material processes include cut-paper, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography, sewing, and weaving. Her artistic journey has taken her from exploration of large disasters to a more personal introspection examining her own private domesticity. She employs decorative repetition and the power of colour to stir emotions, and elicit forgotten moments. Her work has been shown across Canada, the United States and in Portugal. Forsyth began her formal art education at Camosun College receiving her Diploma in Visual Arts (1993) followed by a BFA from the University of Victoria (1996) and an MFA from Rutgers University (2002). Throughout her career as a practicing artist she has maintained a formal connection to art instruction having taught at Pratt Institute (New York, NY); Brooklyn College (Brooklyn, NY); University of Southern Maine (Gorham, ME); Washington State University (Pullman, WA.
