Born in Wuppertal, Germany in 1937, Doris Hryciuk studied art and graphics, earning a diploma from Werkkunstschule, Wuppertal in 1958. After meeting a Canadian Air Force doctor whom she would marry and have four children with, Hryciuk moved from Germany to Ottawa, and lived in Goosebay, Toronto, and Halifax before establishing her family in Victoria, BC in 1970. After arriving in Victoria, she attended the Victoria College of Art, establishing herself as a painter and exhibiting her works at numerous art galleries.
