Flemming Jorgensen was born in Aalborg, Denmark, in 1934, and in 1956 immigrated to Canada. Arriving in Victoria in the late 1950s, he studied commercial art with artist Herbert Siebner. Jorgensen began painting and teaching in the early 1960s, becoming a well-known figure in the Victoria, BC arts community. He was co-founder (with Robin Hopper) of the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts (MISSA), and served as MISSA director from 1984-1996. Jorgensen was associated with the “Point Group” whose membership included artists such as Robert de Castro, Nita Forest, Virginia Lewis, Richard Ciccimarra, Molly Privet, Elza Mayhew, and Michael Morris. Jorgensen exhibited in solo and group shows locally, nationally, and internationally, and his works can be found in public collections across Canada. Jorgensen was a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Victoria in 1998. He passed away in March, 2009.
